Humanin
The burned-in captions and transcript carry the scientific claims and their limitations. The visuals are conceptual illustrations, not validated molecular models or experimental images. The video has no voice or audio. The full explanation is visible on screen; optional accessible captions are available in the player.
Read every result in its study context. A cell experiment, animal model, exploratory analysis and controlled human trial answer different questions.

HUMANIN | Discovery research
Humanin was identified during a search for factors that protected cells from Alzheimer-related laboratory insults. That discovery opened a new research direction. [1]
MOLECULAR + CELLULAR EVIDENCE
Later work examined interactions with Bax, a protein involved in programmed cell death. Humanin is also linked to a short sequence within mitochondrial DNA. [2]
Origin and mechanism need precision
The biology is more complicated than a mitochondrial anti-ageing switch. Related nuclear sequences and the source of the peptide have also been investigated. [3]
No proven dementia or longevity benefit
Protecting cultured cells does not demonstrate prevention of dementia or longer human life. Keep humanin’s experimental promise separate from clinical claims that require direct testing in people. [1] [2]
Sources and context
These linked sources support the evidence distinctions in this short overview. This is not a systematic review, endorsement or treatment recommendation.
- A rescue factor abolishing neuronal cell death by familial Alzheimer disease genes and amyloid-beta →Primary cellular discovery study
- Humanin peptide suppresses apoptosis by interfering with Bax activation →Primary molecular and cellular study
- Pseudogenization of the Humanin gene is common in mitochondrial DNA of many vertebrates →Primary comparative genomics; mitochondrial versus nuclear-origin caveat
