Retatrutide and VK2735 are both being developed for metabolic disease, but their mechanisms and evidence timelines differ. Retatrutide combines GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon receptor activity. VK2735 is a dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist. The number of receptors is not a clinical ranking.

Retatrutide has a published phase 3 obesity trial in the 2026 literature. Viking’s October 2026 update describes ongoing phase 3 VK2735 programs, with subcutaneous studies expected to complete in 2027. Those are different states of evidence, and expected dates remain sponsor projections. Retatrutide phase 3 TRIUMPH 1 trial Viking third quarter 2026 clinical development update

Trial duration changes the comparison

An early study can show rapid activity while leaving durability and longer-term tolerability unresolved. Comparing its percentage change with a much longer trial can favor one candidate simply because different parts of the response curve are being measured.

Other differences include diabetes status, baseline characteristics, treatment exposure and analysis method. A result assuming continued adherence should not be placed beside another estimate without explaining how discontinuation was handled.

Define what better would mean

A meaningful comparison could address weight, glucose control, adverse effects, persistence or broader health outcomes. One candidate might perform differently depending on the endpoint and population. A single headline percentage cannot settle all of these questions.

Formulation matters as well. Evidence for a tablet or an injectable preparation applies to the studied product. It should not be transferred to a research powder sold under the same name.

AXON therefore presents this as a comparison of development programs, not a treatment recommendation. A direct randomized comparison would be more informative than a cross-trial ranking, and investigational status must remain visible until a relevant regulator has made a product-specific decision.
