Preclinical research investigates questions before an intervention is tested in people, often using laboratory systems and animal models. Human clinical research studies people directly. Both are valuable, but they answer different questions and cannot be treated as interchangeable evidence.
What is a preclinical study?
Preclinical work can investigate biological mechanisms, possible activity, exposure, and potential harms. Experiments may occur outside a living organism, such as in cells or biochemical systems, or within an animal model. FDA describes this stage as part of determining whether further development in humans is justified. FDA: Preclinical Research
“Preclinical” does not mean useless or automatically unreliable. It means the study is addressing an earlier part of the evidence chain. A carefully designed cell experiment can be excellent evidence for a cell-level question while being insufficient evidence for a patient-level claim.
Why might an animal result not translate?
Species can differ in physiology, metabolism, receptor biology, and disease features. Experimental conditions may also differ from real human illness. Researchers may use a narrowly defined model that captures one part of a complex condition, rather than the full experience of people living with it.
For example, a study might measure a tissue marker after a controlled laboratory injury. A patient cares about recovery, pain, function, complications, and long-term health. The laboratory marker could be informative without establishing those outcomes.
The development process therefore investigates how a candidate is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated, as well as its potential toxicity and effects in different settings. FDA: Discovery and Development

Clinical trials can examine safety and outcomes in actual participants under a defined protocol. Early studies and later studies serve different purposes. A small early trial may inform further investigation without establishing a durable benefit or detecting uncommon adverse effects. FDA explains that clinical research is not replaced by preclinical observations. FDA: Clinical Research
Even human evidence needs context. Population, comparator, follow-up, outcome selection, and missing data affect what a result means. “Tested in humans” is not the same as “shown to help,” and neither phrase alone establishes regulatory approval.
How should educational articles describe the evidence?
Name the model explicitly: biochemical, cell-based, animal, observational human, or interventional human research. State what was measured and what remains unknown. Avoid changing “associated with a signal in animals” into “heals people.” That discipline preserves the value of early science without turning possibility into a promise.
