Dates on laboratory and pharmaceutical records do not all mean the same thing. A shelf life describes a supported period. An expiration date marks the end of an assigned period for a particular product. A retest date identifies when a material requires reassessment under a defined quality system.

What is a peptide's shelf life?

There is no category-wide answer. Shelf life depends on the specific material, formulation, packaging, storage conditions, and the attributes being measured. A name or sequence alone is not enough to assign a universal number of months or years.

For medicines, FDA explains that expiration dating is supported by stability evidence showing that relevant strength, quality, and purity criteria remain satisfied under labeled conditions. The date is not merely a sales convention, and a consumer cannot safely extend it by judging appearance. FDA: Expiration Dates Questions and Answers

What is a retest date?

ICH Q1A describes a retest date for a drug substance as a point after which the material should be examined again to confirm that it still meets its specification for the intended manufacturing use. This is different from promising indefinite stability. Some labile biological materials appropriately use a shelf life rather than repeated retesting. EMA/ICH Q1A(R2): Stability Testing

A retest result is meaningful only within the applicable system: the correct sample, representative sampling, suitable methods, documented history, and an authorized decision. It is not a general invitation to relabel an expired product or extend the life of a material with an unknown storage history.

Why the evidence behind the date matters

Researchers evaluate both measured changes and uncertainty. ICH Q1E discusses using stability trends and appropriate statistical approaches to estimate a supported period. Data from similar batches or packaging may sometimes be relevant, but their use requires justification. ICH Q1E: Evaluation of Stability Data

Consider a hypothetical label stating “retest after December.” It does not mean the sample suddenly transforms on January 1. It means the evidence or quality-system decision no longer supports continuing under the prior status without the specified reassessment. That is a boundary on justified use, not a chemical alarm clock.

A useful reading habit

Look for the exact term used, the lot it applies to, the conditions attached to it, and the supporting document. Do not treat a supplier's retest date, a medicine's expiration date, and a laboratory's internal review date as synonyms. This overview does not establish a storage period for any AXON product.
