Semax

The burned-in captions and transcript carry the scientific claims and their limitations. The visuals are conceptual illustrations, not validated molecular models or experimental images. The video has no voice or audio. The full explanation is visible on screen; optional accessible captions are available in the player.

Read every result in its study context. A cell experiment, animal model, exploratory analysis and controlled human trial answer different questions.

Transcript

Semax | Rat brain-signalling study

Semax research includes experiments on brain signalling. A 2006 study measured BDNF-related changes in the rat hippocampus, a brain region involved in learning and memory. [1]

A biomarker is not a patient outcome

A change in a signalling protein can suggest a mechanism. It does not, by itself, show better memory or a useful treatment effect in people. [1]

FDA BRIEFING | July 2026

FDA’s July 2026 briefing found insufficient effectiveness evidence for Semax-related substances in cerebral ischemia, migraine and trigeminal neuralgia. That assessment concerns specific proposed uses. [2]

Identity, outcomes and safety matter

The same briefing raises product-characterization and safety concerns. Keep the exact substance, study population and clinical outcome visible when assessing a claim about Semax. [2]

Sources and context

These linked sources support the evidence distinctions in this short overview. This is not a systematic review, endorsement or treatment recommendation.

  1. Dolotov et al. (2006): Semax, an analog of ACTH(4-10) with cognitive effects, regulates BDNF and trkB expression in the rat hippocampus →Measured BDNF/TrkB-related responses, not a human cognitive-efficacy trial.
  2. FDA: Semax-related bulk drug substances briefing for July 23-24, 2026 PCAC meeting →Pages 28 and 40-41 discuss the assessed indications, limitations and characterization/safety concerns; advisory briefing is not a final determination.
