Pulsatile hormone signals are releases that rise and fall in bursts rather than remaining constant. The timing of a signal can carry biological information, just as the spacing of words changes the meaning of a message.
Pattern can matter as much as amount
Cells respond not only to the total exposure but also to how that exposure is delivered. Pulse frequency, amplitude and duration can influence responsiveness and downstream signaling. A continuous signal can therefore behave differently from intermittent stimulation even when the overall amount seems similar.
A landmark experiment in rhesus monkeys showed that intermittent and continuous delivery of GnRH produced different sustained pituitary responses. The result established the importance of temporal pattern in that experimental system; it did not mean all hormones follow the same schedule. Belchetz and colleagues, Science, 1978
Pulses and daily rhythms are related but distinct
A hormone can have short pulses within a broader day–night pattern. Circadian rhythms coordinate many physiological processes, including hormone release. Sleep, light exposure and other cues can influence this organization. NIGMS: Circadian rhythms

A single measurement may catch a peak or a trough. Researchers use repeated sampling and suitable analytical methods to characterize a pattern. Sparse measurements can miss important differences.
What “preserved pulsatility” does not prove
An intervention can leave some pulses visible while changing baseline exposure or other features of the system. Describing one preserved pattern is not equivalent to proving a normal overall state or long-term safety.
Pulsatile signaling shows why endocrine biology cannot be reduced to maximizing a concentration. Timing, feedback and tissue response all contribute to the meaning of a hormone signal.
