Lifespan is how long an organism lives. Healthspan concerns how much of that life is spent in good health or with preserved function. The distinction matters because an intervention could influence survival, function and disease burden in different ways.
Healthspan needs a definition
Researchers do not always measure it identically. Some use time before a major disease or disability. Others use health-adjusted life expectancy, which weights years by health status. A physical-performance measure can describe an important aspect of health without measuring healthspan as a whole.
A multinational analysis comparing life expectancy and healthy life expectancy showed that longer survival does not automatically eliminate years lived with health limitations. These population estimates are useful for policy, but they do not predict one individual’s future. Healthspan–lifespan gaps across world regions

A treatment that improves walking ability could be valuable even if it does not extend life. Conversely, an intervention that extends survival but adds substantial disability raises a different set of questions. Scientific reports should state which endpoint was measured rather than use “longevity” to cover both.
The same applies to animal research. Longer life in a model does not tell readers whether function, disease or quality of life improved unless those outcomes were also measured.
What readers should look for
Look for the actual endpoint and its definition: survival, disease-free years, independence, cognition, physical function or a laboratory marker. Ask whether the follow-up was long enough to support the claim and whether benefits were balanced against harms.
The goal of aging research is not one number detached from daily life. Clear definitions help distinguish living longer from living well for longer and make the value of a finding easier to judge.
